Crazy Hat and Hair Fundraiser Day

Take part in a fun filled mufti day. Wear your funkiest clothes and hat - or create your craziest hairdo's. We simply ask you to donate a gold coin to wear your mufti, hat and hair in a mad and crazy way for the day. This year funds raised will go towards the three year 'Operation Outdoors' project which is aimed at significantly upgrading the school grounds and swimming pool for both the safety and enjoyment of the children.

Dig deep or donate- more families needed :)

The posters are up for Dig Deep or Donate Arahoe Primary Schools very first Arbour Day event and here is some more information.
Arahoe Arbour Day
In June it is national arbour day, a day to inspire people to nurture the environment and plant native trees. In recognition of this we will be planting native trees into the banks surrounding the school fields.
What is Dig Deep or Donate?
The term Dig Deep means dig a deep hole in the school bank, donate is giving you the option as a parent to donate your very own native tree to plant on the school bank.
Arahoe Primary has been donated 50 native trees for Arbour Day, we need your help along with your child/children to dig the trees into the school bank. Bring along your spade at 9am on the 19th of June on the school field to help us plant the trees.
Due to only having 15 native trees left  please let Dana Turner danat@arahoe.school.nz know if you would like to come and dig a tree in. Alternatively you can bring along your own native tree to dig into the school bank, every donated or dug in tree will receive an eco-name tag. The trees we would like to be donated are Kanuka, Karaka, Kowhai, Lacebark, Pittosporum or Pohutakawa.
Who: You and your children and two local New Zealand comedians Dai Henwood and Uzila Carlson will be joining us for the event.
When: 19th of June 9am School Field – after the roll has been called, come on down with your child
What: bring your children, gumboots and spade and a few coins as PSG will be there selling eco friendly cakes, biscuits, tea, milo and coffee.
RSVP to danat@arahoe.school.nz
Look forward to seeing you on the 19th

Transfer Station Trip

Transfer Station Trip

On Wednesday the 21st May. Room 14 and Room 20 went to the Transfer Station in Henderson. We didn't let the rain dampen our spirits. We put on our hard hats and jackets on and enjoyed our tour of the transfer station! Here are some things we learnt, saw and did.

Firstly we went on a tour of the station- we learnt you have to pay to drop off items such as wood, paint and tree branches but it's FREE to collect them and  re use them. We also saw different parts on the transfer station and where things get sorted E.g recycling and what it looks like once it has been sorted. Did you know  that our milk bottles don't get recycled in New Zealand? They get squashed down and sent to Thailand or Malaysia.

Next we visited the Transfer Station's worm farm. We learnt that only Tiger worms can go in a worm farm, not garden worms. We learnt about what foods they can and can't eat. Foods they can't eat are mainly  foods we like. Such as cooked food, onions and spicy foods.

  • We then went into the classroom and learnt about house hold rubbish and sorted our very own rubbish bag into 4 groups.  Recycling, Re-usables, Landfill/Rubbish and Paper Waste

Then Bella got turned into a tiger worm at the very end! We had a fantastic day! A big thank you to all of our parent helpers-Fleur, Lois, Kate, Anna and Sara who helped make the day possible!!

Photos to transfer trip will be up tomorrow :)

Hi parents/caregivers,

Photos to our transfer station will be up tomorrow the iPad is about to die and just my luck the charger is at school! I will also be putting up a display in the classroom so make sure you come and check it out!

Sorry for the delay!!

Update for Week 2- reminders and notices :)

Hi All,

We have had another fantastic week in Room 14 getting to know one another! Here a few things that are coming up next week, reminders and notices.

If you haven't already seen on our webiste or App. We have cross country on Monday afternoon students need suitable footwear for running and are encouraged to bring clothes to run in other than their uniform. They will need to wear their uniform to school.

We have our trip to the transfer station on Wednesday- please make sure permission slips are returned and money has been paid. If you have lost your notice, please let me know and I can email or print you another one :) A couple of parents can no longer help out on our trip so If anyone is available on Wednesday please let me know as I need 1 or 2 more helpers.

As the weather is getting cold and damp, lots of children are coming to school with runny noses. I have brought a couple of boxes of tissues, but I would appreciate if you could send in a box with your child at some point over the term. The warehouse is having a big sale this week and I got a box for $1 each!!

Just a reminder book bags and notebooks need to come everyday! I have been encouraging the children to take ownership and manage themselves. They should be putting it straight back in their bags after they have read with you and done their homework! So if you could help remind them of this, it would be much appreciated. Also poem books need to be returned on Monday so they are here to glue our poem in on Friday.

Have a great weekend! :) :)

Waste survey

Hi Parents/Caregivers,

I have added a link to an online survey which has 9 questions- most which are multi-choice and some give the option for you to write your own paragraph. This survey is for the purpose of getting to know what you and your child know about waste, how you dispose of it and if you know anything about or use a compost bin or a worm farm.

It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. We are asking all the parents and caregivers in Ara Teina to fill it in so we can collate the results. It would be much appreciated if you could take the time to fill it in.

Thanks!

Transfer Station-plan for the day

Transfer Station Trip – plan for the day
Firstly, thank you very much for taking the time to come with us on our trip to the Transfer Station.  If it wasn’t for your support we could not go on trips such as this.

As you will appreciate, the Transfer Station has many hazards.  This means that we need you to help monitor several children throughout our visit today.  Please follow the directions of our tour guide at all times.  We strongly suggest that you refrain from taking photographs during the visit today as we need your undivided attention to ensure that our children are fully supervised at all times.

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you for your prompt return of permission slips and payment for our trip to the Refuse Station in Henderson.

For our trip to the Refuse Station on Wednesday 21 May children will need
to wear covered shoes and have their morning tea packed in a small plastic bag.  As we will be back at school at about 12.30, children will eat lunch then. We will be packing our morning tea bags into a small box to take with us, as requested by the Refuse Station.

If it is raining we will continue the trip, as there are inside facilities as part of the tour.

For parents coming on the trip, to comply with safety standards we need one delegated photographer for each class and no cell phones.  Please let your classroom teacher know if you are interested in taking photos- this parent will not be responsible for any students.

Thanks again,
Miss Sarah Ellis (Room 20) and Miss Samantha Scarlett (Room 14)

PE- Gymnastics

Today we did Gymnastics last block. We are learning to land on both feet, run and jump and tuck our chin into our neck when doing a forward roll. Check out the photos below!

Whole school rubbish collection

Today we went to the hall and listened to Y5 and 6 students explain what rubbish they had collected from the whole school, how they were sorting it and what dangerous materials they found. It was really interesting what we found out. Ask your children the 2 main dangerous items they found.
